Pupdate: Goldie’s Progress, Newsletters and more…

It's been almost 3 months since I adopted sweet, little Goldie, and I'm happy to report she's doing well. Initially she was afraid of Don, which concerned me, but I think it was because his new job was stressing him out, making him somewhat volatile and unpredictable. To be honest,…Read more Pupdate: Goldie’s Progress, Newsletters and more…

Why’s that dog on the bus? — Kathryn McClatchy

The manuscript for Why’s That Dog in Here? is drafted, and first round revisions are underway. I thought you might enjoy a sneak peek, so I asked Steve to pick a scene for me to share. The book is a series of questions people ask, examples of how Gizmo mitigates my disabilities, and positive and […]…Read more Why’s that dog on the bus? — Kathryn McClatchy

A Sweet Tribute to Henry

This lovely announcement appeared in The Gnus, a newsletter from the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, where Henry and I used to work. It was written by Kirin Daugherty, Manager of Volunteer Programs. Since Henry's passing I've received many emails, cards and flowers from his friends. He was one popular dude! Thank you very…Read more A Sweet Tribute to Henry

Distractions from Depression During the Holidays – Do They Work?

It may seem odd that I'm writing about my holiday "blues" this late in the game, but for me, Christmas day is the darkest. It brings inexplicable depression and despair, so I call it D-Day. All the hoopla in the weeks preceding Christmas doesn't bother me at all. In fact, that's when I have fun getting my holiday…Read more Distractions from Depression During the Holidays – Do They Work?

Giving Paws–Book Review and Recommendation

Kathryn McClatchy

Giving Paws, Martha L. Thompson, Self-Help: Personal Growth/Happiness
Stars: 4.5

I must confess at the outset that this book was sent to me by the author. She discovered my website a number of months before her book was released. As we both write about experiences with invisible/chronic illnesses and our service dogs, we quickly connected. Our online comments moved offline, and an email friendship was born. When Giving Paws was released in October, Martha asked if I would like a copy. I happily accepted her gift, complete with little Henry’s paw print as part of the author’s autograph. Please understand that even though this book was a gift, it was in no way in exchange for a review of any kind. Being a writer myself, I know how important reviews are. Martha won awards for her previous book, The Oxygen Mask Rule*, so I was eager to read…

“Pins and needles” and yarn and felt. My favorite anti-anxiety “meds.”

With all the excitement from my book coming out, I should be dancing little jigs and feeling content, right? Don't get me wrong, I'm ultra grateful for all the positive feedback from my kind readers, and I do feel a sense of accomplishment, but my brain chemistry has two settings: 1) totally elated - "manicky,"…Read more “Pins and needles” and yarn and felt.
